PLATINUM - IZUMO YAKUMONURI

Yakumo, floating clouds painted on the ceiling of Izumo Shrine, is used as a motif. The sea of clouds is described brightly with colored urushi while the outlying has been drawn in silver to accentuate the design. It undergoes a grinding process where by the multilayers of colored urushi is brought to the surface. Numerous processes are necessary in the delicate and time-consuming art of Togi-Yakumo.

With time, urushi becomes increasingly more transparent, thus the pattern starts slightly to emerge, changing into a deeper and richer pattern within its glossy finish. This gives it a mysterious feel. This “Togi Yakumo” fountain pen is one of the three luxury Izumo Yakumonuri fountain pens that features ceiling painting of the Izumo Shrine as a motif, that are made by the Japanese highly skilled craftsmanship.

Ebonite, which is known as the best material to be used on fountain pen for its heat resistant performance, is used on this model. The Izumo Yakumo is a large pen made of ebonite with an urushi lacquer coating. The arising sea of clouds, which are the symbolic image of the Izumo Shrine, are expressed with the maki-e technique, and the floating clouds painted on the ceiling of the Izumo Shrine, are used as a motif and described brightly with colored urushi. Yakumonuri technique applies several coatings of sukiurushi (transparent lacquer), in which urushi becomes increasingly more transparent with time, thus the pattern starts slightly to emerge, changing into a deeper and richer pattern within its glossy finish. This streamlined king size design offers a relaxed writing that does not need the cap on the back of their pens.

This king size pen has a simple classic cigar shaped, with almost every surface is curved. When the pen is closed, the only piece of trim is the clip. Because of the convex shape, this pen can fit in the fingers perfectly. For a pen, it is full of warmth and character. The barrel is hand-made, all the coatings, wax and oil polished are applied by the experienced craftsmen, resulting a rich and deep finish making it a marvelous piece of art.
